Wayne Wolfe

Wayne Wolfe

Wayne Wolfe was born and reared in Kansas City and graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Journalism. His father, Byron Wolfe, was an early member of the Cowboy Artists of America.

Wolfe studied with Robert Lougheed in Santa Fe, New Mexico and apprenticed with him for six years. Lougheed insisted that he learn the language of nature by painting landscapes on location. While in Santa Fe, Wolfe also studied with Tom Lovell to learn about the human figure.

Now living in a home and studio in Southwest Colorado, Wolfe primarily paints the American Rockies, but painting trips also take him to Canada, New England, Europe and the British Isles.

He is a recipient of the Stacey Foundation Award and has been a member of the National Academy of Western Art, where he won the prestigious Prix de West Purchase Award. He exhibits at the Prix de West Invitational, National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; the National Museum of Wildlife Art, Jackson Hole, Wyoming and the Gilcrease Museum, where he was honored with a retrospective and exhibition.

Wolfe's art has been featured in many publications, including Southwest Art, Sports Afield and American Artist. Selected collections include those of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, Gilcrease Museum, the Rockwell Museum and the Denver Art Museum. He has taught at the Scottsdale Artists' School and the Loveland Academy of Fine Art.
