Jim Wilcox
The plein air paintings of the Grand Tetons have become Jim Wilcox's signature works and, to many, the definitive icons of the American West. His paintings of the mountains, forests, streams and the Teton Range around his home and studio in Jackson, Wyoming, represent the very essence of the grandeur and natural beauty of the region. Not only does Wilcox paint the west, his subject matter also extends as far as Hawaii's coastal landscapes. He continues in the tradition of the American landscape painters such as Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt, to whom he pays tribute. More contemporary artists such as Tom Lovell, Richard Schmid, Wilson Hurley and Robert Lougheed have also influenced his work.
His majestic oil landscapes have earned him numerous awards and honors. He has been honored with a membership in the National Academy of Western Art, won the Prix de West award and is a frequent exhibitor in the Prix de West Invitational. He is also a regular participant and award winner in the National Arts for the Parks show every year and in 1994 won the coveted $50,000 Grand Prize at that same competition. He received his education from Brigham Young University and taught high school in Seattle before moving his family to Wyoming. He and his wife, Narda, have seven children, six sons and a daughter.
