Grant Speed

Grant Speed

Grant Speed spent a lot of time experimenting with art as a child, but did not consider being an artist as a career. While in the military, Speed spent his free time doing artwork and received favorable comments from his fellow servicemen. Speed later attended Brigham Young University where he took as many art electives as possible. After graduating, he got a job but continued to practice his art in the evenings. Speed has always enjoyed visiting galleries and on one occasion was impressed by the work of Charles M. Russell. It was at this same gallery that Speed sold his first three bronzes.

Speed has served as President of the Cowboy Artists of America and has been a member since its founding in 1966. He has also received numerous honors, awards and commissions throughout his career. He was the first recipient of the Western Artist of the Year award at the Festival of the American West and won the Prix de West Award from the National Academy of Western Art. He was commissioned to create a monumental sculpture of Charles Goodnight for the Panhandle Plains Museum in Texas, five different large-scale works for Texas Tech University, a larger-than-life portrait of Buddy Holly, and several private commissions.
