Shirley Thomson Smith

Shirley Thomson Smith

Though born in St. Louis, Shirley Thomson Smith has been deeply influenced by her experience of living in Durango, Colorado, and traveling throughout New Mexico. There she observed the powerful traditions of Native Americans and was particularly drawn to the strength, character and symbolic role of Native American women. Today, these women are her subjects.

The modern sculptures she creates radiate sensitivity, love and a certain authority because of their simplicity – the abstract form untouched by surface decoration. Smith's work is strongly influenced by the qualities and characteristics of both modern art and tribal cultures. Her bronze sculptures create a synthesis of modern solutions to form, shape and surface and the traditional cultures of Native American art forms.

Smith studied art at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University. She is a lifetime member of the Oklahoma Sculptor Society, National Academy of Western Art, associate member of the National Sculpture Society and founding member of American Women Artists and the West. Her work is represented in galleries and collections across the nation, and she is a multiple award winner at both national and regional competitions.
