Steve Hanks
It has been said of Steve Hanks' work that he has the skill to capture the viewer's emotions through his watercolor and oil paintings of people. His mastery of form, color and representation of light has brought him international recognition as well as critical acclaim through numerous awards and honors. Hanks' education began at the San Francisco Academy of Art, but lacking an interest in commercial art, he transferred to the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Hanks' subjects are always portraits, particularly of women. He finds women “express more storytelling ability.” His interest in people as subjects comes from the challenge he finds in painting them and he finds women and children to be the most difficult to paint because, as he says, “there's more magic in them.”
Steve Hanks has won numerous awards throughout his career including the Gold Medal awarded by the National Academy of Western Art in 1992. In the fall of 2007, Greenwich Workshop Press published Moving On: The Art of Steve Hanks, written by Steve Hanks and Keith Olson.
