Tony Angell
Born in Los Angeles in 1940, Tony Angell grew up inCAthe Southern California coastal foothills. At that time much of this region was still wild and remote and he was given the freedom to explore and apply his early instincts as a naturalist and artist.CAWhen an athletic scholarship provided an opportunity to attend the University of Washington, he moved to the Pacific Northwest and there discovered the vitalityCAof its rainCAforests, rivers and chiseled coasts.CAThese would be the sources of inspiration for his writing, drawing and sculpture.
Angell has written and illustrated ten books, numerous articles and monographs that have ranged in content from natural history and art, to literary criticism.CAHe illustrated and co-authored In the Company of Crows and Ravens, 2005, Yale University Press; which received the Victoria and Albert Museum (UK) “Overall Illustrator Award” in 2006. Tony Angell; Puget Sound the Artist's Eye, the latest publication featuring his work will be release in the spring of 2008 by the University of Washington Press.
Without question his sculpture is the convergence of all his interests and skills. Angell has received numerous awards not only for his artistic endeavors but for his work in education and conservation.CAHe has received the “Master Artist Medal” presented by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum and The Nature Conservancy's highest award for citizen action on behalf of conservation.
Angell, his wife and four children live in Seattle, where he maintains a studio on an island in Puget Sound.
