Sunday Matinee Films - The Iron Horse
STEAM TRAIN SERIES: A three-part series on the steam train and its impact on changing the terrain of The West as well as those who lived and travelled there. Dr. Joseph Kestner, Director of Film Studies at the University of Tulsa, will provide pre-film commentary and lead the audience dialogue following the screening.
Conceived on a grand scale, this silent film on the building of the first American transcontinental railroad elevated its director/producer John Ford to undisputed status as the creator of the Epic Western. The culminating scene of two steam locomotives meeting head-to-head on May 10, 1869, having travelled the distance on track laid by Irish and Chinese workers, leaves the viewer with a sense of both an ending and a beginning. Starring George O’Brien, Madge Bellamy, Charles Edward Bull, Cyril Chadwick, and Will Walling. B&W, 1924, 133 minutes, not rated.
Feb. 21st - Films will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Tom Gilcrease Jr. Auditorium
