Why History Matters

History is often perceived as little more than a series of dates and figures memorized in grade school – 1066 and William the Conqueror, 1492 and Christopher Columbus, 1776 and the Founding Fathers, 1861 and Abraham Lincoln. This one dimensional formula renders history inaccessible and seemingly irrelevant, a perception that museums endeavor to reverse. Kim Roblin, associate curator at Gilcrease, will discuss her passion for history and use items from the collection to illustrate its relevance, focusing not on dates and events, but the people who lived through them—emphasizing that history is not his story or her story, but ultimately our story.
