Biography:
|
Constantly evolving, Steve Tomlin has successfully presented groups of work; American Family Reunion, Flying Figures and Cedars. These series have not only delicately portrayed images, but assigned a reverence to the subject eliciting strong viewer emotions.
Steve has developed a body of abstract work that is both bold and subtle. Steve explains, Each picture I complete introduces the next. I have never intended to create a series. It just happens. I enjoy exploring the direction so much that I continue until I exhaust the possibilities.
My experiences in life have given me a sensitive view of the world that is reflected in my work. As a Viet Nam veteran, I had the opportunity early in life to know a culture different than mine. The role of art teacher has allowed me to maintain an openminded attitude toward the visual arts.
My current work is my joy. I begin by giving myself restrictions on the canvas. This allows me more freedom with the interplay of the elements. I use an average of 20 layers to create this interplaying color field. Sometimes the grid is obvious, sometimes not. Now circles or spheres are evolving in my work that I must address.
Steve Tomlin has been working more than 30 years as an educator and artist. He has participated and placed in countless group exhibits as a twodimensional mixed media artist. An established twodimensional media manipulator in contemporary work, he is collected nationwide.
In 1999 he was chosen poster artist for Tulsa International Mayfest and was the spotlighted artist for the Festival of Trees at Philbrook Art Museum. He shows regularly with Tulsa Artists Coalition, Oklahoma Visual Artists Coalition and Individual Artists of Oklahoma, and is represented by M A Doran gallery.
Private students complete his busy studio schedule. As art teacher at Grissom School, he has lead the school to achieve A+ status in the state of Oklahoma. Grissom celebrated being an outstanding arts school through ARTS POWER in Oklahoma in 2003. Tomlin was awarded the Kennedy Center Creative Ticket in 2005, placing his visual arts program top in the state of Oklahoma. Gilcrease Museum and Philbrook have employed Tomlin for programs and workshops throughout the school year and summers.
