Color and creativity best describe Marie Renfros paintings in oil or acrylic. A very versatile artist, Renfro enjoys using various media to express her emotional response to an idea or subject. An intuitive approach to painting helps her find compositions and subjects she might otherwise never consider. She has painted for 40 years, and through the years, has tried many new surfaces and ideas.
Renfros work is based on strong color, texture, and design. Mixing collage with paint is the favorite mode of her current work. She begins a painting with wet paper and lets the paint and the reaction of the water give her stimulus for beginning the composition and design. It is very exciting to see a painting start to emerge under her skillful hands.
Renfro has retired from teaching at Collin County Community College in Plano Texas, where she taught Watercolor and Mixed Media. Through the years she also taught Painting and Design.
Renfro and seven other women artists founded and ran Gallery VIII in West Plano for 21 years, closing the gallery in June 2003. She has shown her work across the state including a onewoman show in the Laredo Arts Center in Laredo, Texas. She was also included in an Alumni Show at Texas Womans University in 2003, as well as a one woman show in the 1550 Gallery in Kerrville, Texas, in January 2003.
Renfros formal training includes a Master of Fine Arts degree from Texas Womans University, with additional study in Switzerland, France, Holland, Italy, England, Greece, Spain, Russia and Mexico.
