Biography:
|
I have always found working in the medium of graphite to be challenging and rewarding. Winnowing things down to their basic shapes, tonal qualities and textures is what gets my creative juices flowing. I also find joy in spotlighting the little things that can be overlooked or missed in passing.
Terry Miller was born in Iowa, spent his school years in northern New Jersey and graduated from art school in the late 1960s. After spending a number of years working in various architectural offices in Manhattan, he moved south in 1980 and began working with emotionally disturbed children in special education. During that time, he continued to work on his drawing skills when time allowed and after a very positive showing at his first major entry into the exhibition of his art in 1990, he decided to turn professional.
Miller has traveled throughout Africa, sketching and referencing the wildlife and natural surroundings on 7 trips since the early 1970s, and numerous trips across the United States and Canada have also added to his sketch and photo files. Working exclusively in various grades of graphite, he portrays his personal experiences in the field through delicate line work and the strong textural contrasts that so lend themselves to his chosen medium. His works have earned numerous awards over the years and have been included in national and international exhibitions and can be found in the collections of major museums and corporations as well as private collections on this continent and across the globe. Over a dozen of his works were included as illustrations in Where Elephants Go To Die, a recently published book of poetry about Africa and its animals. His work was also recently spotlighted in the March 2009 issue of The Artists Magazine. In the summer of 2008, the Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin hosted a solo exhibition of nearly 40 of Terrys works under the title, Unknown Bridges. A book of the exhibition works was published simultaneously.
Terry currently resides just outside of Washington D. C. in suburban Maryland.
