Helen F. Howerton is a painter who creates images of wildlife and western themes. Her paintings, in oil or acrylic, capture the impression and character of her subject. She paints in plein air as well as in her studio using references she has gathered through extensive field study and research.
Howerton has been an invitational artist for the American Art in Miniature exhibition for the Gilcrease Museum (2000-2007). Her paintings have been displayed in juried group exhibitions at the Hilligoss Galleries (2007), Loch Vale Gallery (2007), Great Plains Art Museum (2006), Ronald Reagan Presidential Library (2003 & 2004), Old West Museum, C.M. Russell Museum, Philbrook Museum, American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog and the George Ohr Museum. The Oklahoma Heritage Museum hosted three solo exhibitions of Howerton’s paintings in 2002-2005. Numerous solo and group exhibitions have been held in galleries in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming. Howerton’s works are included in the permanent collection of the Oklahoma State Capitol Legislators, Tulsa Public Schools, Oklahoma Wildlife Department, Haldor-Topsoe, Inc., Wichita Falls Art Museum and Services & Technologies.
Howerton’s work has been featured on KJRH, KOTV and the Garden Channel television stations. Her articles and reviews have published in several magazines and newspapers. Her painting, Cabernet Sunset, will appear on two wine labels in 2008 for Tidal School Vineyards, Drumright, Oklahoma. Haldor Topsoe, Inc. has commissioned 11 original big cat paintings for their corporate offices in Houston and Denmark.
Howerton is a member of Oil Painters of America, American Plains Artists and Women Artists of the West for which she is currently serving as the 2008 business development director. She has been a Signature Board Member for nine years, has served as judge for several juried art competitions and conducts one or two workshops yearly.
Howerton, a native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The University of Tulsa (1966). She has studied with Bob Kuhn, Ron Riddick, Jim Wilcox and Carl Brenders. |
