Joey Frisillo’s landscapes are inspired by the variety of beauty in her Oklahoma surroundings and other intriguing locales. Whether painting sweeping vistas or closer, more intimate subjects, she enlivens her pastels and oils with rich layers of color and texture.
Her love of drawing and painting began when she was a child growing up in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. This led to a fine arts major at Miami University of Ohio. Her artistic journey was sidetracked by a 25-year career in oil and gas exploration in Denver, Colorado, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Renewing her focus on fine art has brought great pleasure to Frisillo as well as awards and national recognition. Her artistic style and skill in both oil and pastel have garnered recent honors including Best of Show at Women Artists of the West, 38th Invitational at Hilligoss Galleries in Chicago, and an Award of Excellence from Art of the West magazine. She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and an associate member of the Oil Painters of America and Women Artists of the West. Frisillo is an active member of the art community, serving as 2007 president of the Ozark Pastel Society, a regional pastel organization, and as 2003 president of Alpha Rho Tau Civic Art Association in Tulsa. She has been on the Board of Directors for Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition for three years and belongs to the Tulsa Artist Guild, Bartlesville Art Association and the Oklahoma Pastel Society.
Frisillo’s artwork has been exhibited in Gilcrease and Philbrook museums and is part of public and private collections in the U.S. and abroad. She is represented by Color Connection Gallery in Utica Square, Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Artist Statement
Autumn is a time of exciting beauty as the evening light filters through the leaves of the old oak and hickory trees such as these in Evening Highlights. My AAIM entry is a painting from a series featuring the ancient Cross Timbers landscape of Oklahoma. This old growth habitat is being preserved in the newly designated Keystone Ancient Forest Preserve, which is two miles from my home and studio. I am honored to be included in the American Art in Miniature at Gilcrease and wanted to showcase our native Oklahoma landscape. |
