Steve Forbis received his formal education at the University of Texas Austin with a B.A. degree in anthropology (1972) and an M.A. degree, also in anthropology.
His primary original media are prismacolor pencils on paper and stone lithography. Prints and posters have also been published. Forbis’s subject matter is almost exclusively contemporary American Indians, particularly from New Mexico and Arizona.
He began selling his work in 1969 through several galleries and shows, and launched a full-time career upon graduation from the University of Texas in 1972.
Forbis’s work in stone lithography began in 1977 at Western Graphics (Albuquerque); and from 1981 until the present, all printing has been at Naravisa Press in Santa Fe with master printer Steve Britko. Lithographs and color pencil drawings can be found in Austin at Gallery of the Republic, in Santa Fe at Wadle Gallery as well as other galleries throughout the country. |
