D.M. Bates was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1952.

He graduated in 1975 from Southern Methodist University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and received his Master of Fine Arts degree from SMU in 1978. In 1977, he was part of an independent study program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.

Bates is known for his realistic and narrative painting style.

Throughout the years, Bates has held numerous solo and group exhibitions. His work is in the collections of a number of museums throughout the United States.
